The holidays are almost upon us and, if you have an out-of-town trip planned, you’re again faced with the challenge of finding a dog boarding solution.
Maybe you have a trusted pet sitter you use or a boarding kennel that was recommended to you. But, before you decide on one of those expensive options, consider the alternative: Why not send your beloved pet to a dog boot camp while you’re away?
For little more than you would expect to spend on a live-in pet sitter or a cold, sterile boarding facility, you could send Fido on a working vacation with an experienced dog trainer.
What Are the Risks of Boarding Your Dog?
Certainly, some boarding kennels are safe, loving and comfortable for your pet. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to find such a location. And, if you do, you can expect to pay a hefty price tag.
Most boarding facilities plop your pet in a small kennel for the duration of his stay, providing food and water but little else – unless you’re willing to pay extra. You face daily extra charges for walks, play time outside the kennel, treats, etc.
As for risks, this environment is not optimal. Packed in with dozens of other dogs, you pet could be exposed to diseases and, if the animals are not properly supervised, Fido could even find himself injured in a tangle with an aggressive dog.
Should You Hire a Pet Sitter?
What about hiring someone to either stay at your home while you’re away or to stop in several times each day to feed and walk your dog?
if you have trusted friend, relative or professional pet sitter, you may find peace of mind with this option. But, again, it won’t come cheap. If you hire a service, you have no idea who you’ve put your trust in – and placing the safety and well-being of your pet (not to mention, your home) in a stranger is not appealing to many pet owners.
Why Consider a Dog Boot Camp?
If you are uncomfortable with the most common pet boarding options, why not consider scheduling Fido to attend a dog boot camp during your time away?
While there, your pet will be under the constant care of a professional dog trainer. Not only will Fido be safe and well cared-for, but he will also be learning new skills. Obedience, good manners and socialization are just some of the valuable experiences your pet will enjoy at dog training camp.
You’re going to spend the money to board your pet anyway, so it makes good sense to make it an investment in your dog’s development.
